CORM Provides Semen Analysis to Couples with Questions about Infertility

If a couple is having trouble conceiving a child, their doctor may suggest semen analysis for the husband as an initial step. The semen analysis is non-invasive and relatively inexpensive and may provide immediate information as to why conception has not been achieved. A reputable infertility clinic such as the Center of Reproductive Medicine (CORM) has reproductive specialists that can perform the evaluation. The reproductive specialists at CORM want to empower men and women to recognize and understand not only how the analysis is performed, but what the results indicate.

In order to get an accurate semen analysis, men should know the test involves the following steps:

  • Abstaining from ejaculation for two to three days before the test.
  • Collecting a sample into a sterile collection cup either at home or at the doctor’s office.
  • Maintaining the sample at room to body temperature and delivering it promptly if done at home.
  • A semen analysis should be repeated at least three times over several months.

The semen analysis will not confirm the fertility potential of the male but may identify the need for assisted reproductive techniques such as intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization. The semen analysis is also required to confirm the absence of sperm following a vasectomy.

Semen Analysis Findings are Only Part of Your Fertility Report

Just as you would in the birth of your child, the couple should both be present when the doctor discusses the results of the semen analysis so that both partners understand the implications. The semen analysis report includes:

  • Any abnormalities in sperm count, morphology (shape), or motility (movement and progression).
  • The amount of semen produced (volume)
  • Number of sperm per milliliter of semen (concentration)
  • Absence or presence of white blood cells

Your fertility doctors at CORM will evaluate your semen analysis with great care. During your consultation, they will discuss what will be studied and what the indicating factors actually mean so that you can begin the necessary steps to start a family. Semen Analysis Is A Revealing Primary Step

[Posted on January 23]

Semen analysis can reveal much about the amount and quality of sperm a man produces. It will establish the number of sperm that is produced as well as the shape and motility. Motility is the number of sperm that can move forward normally. If a couple is trying for pregnancy and they are having trouble with conception an analysis is usually performed to determine if the man has a reproductive problem that may be causing infertility. Male infertility is cause for conception issues in about thirty-five percent of the cases. This is a relatively routine way to begin fertility testing in a couple. If the analysis discloses that the male’s fertility is not in question then fertility testing becomes centered on the female.

A male fertility test can also be conducted to test the efficacy of a vasectomy and determine if it was successful. And a semen analysis is required if at some point the male decides to have a vasectomy reversal and needs to determine if the reversal was a success. A sample is collected and then a lab examines the sample for count, appearance, shape, and motility. A low sperm count may be indicative of a fertility issue but that doesn’t mean that conception is impossible. Some men with low sperm counts go on to father children.

If you feel that there are issues with your ability to conceive then you should consult with fertility doctors to help find the underlying problems, if they exist. There are wide arrays of tests that can be performed and appropriate treatments available. You doctor will explain each test and then go over in great detail the results and what course of treatment, if any, they recommend. Treatment for infertility has a great chance for success and couples should feel positive about seeking help.

The Center of Reproductive Medicine in Houston is devoted to exploring the precise reason for each fertility difficulty and recommending the best and most cost effective approach to treatment. If you are considering semen analysis or have need of more comprehensive information please call us and set up an initial consultation with one of our reproductive specialists.
